WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Three Boilermaker volleyball players took center stage once again on February 23, but this time it wasn't on the volleyball court. Blair Bashen, Carrie Gurnell and Lisa Pierce took part in the 2008 18th Annual Spelling Bee for Literacy. The event, which took place at Sunnyside Middle School, was hosted by the Lafayette Adult Resource Academy (LARA). Members of the community were encouraged to participate with prizes being awarded to the winners. Unlike a traditional spelling bee, this was a team-based event. Each team consisted of three spellers. When a team was a given a word, all three members were allowed to collaborate, but only one person could spell the word. Each team member rotated turns as the speller. Purdue's own Spiking Spellers were knocked out in the third round with only five teams left. In advance of the spelling bee, each team received the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee 2008 Spell It booklet in order that they may learn included words. The Boilermaker volleyball team returns to the court on March 29 for the University of Michigan Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. Purdue is slated to face Eastern Michigan, Northern Michigan, Notre Dame and the host Wolverines at the tournament.
