WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's basketball team wrapped up its exhibition slate on Thursday night as the Boilermakers cruised past visiting Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU), 86-60. Freshmen E'Twaun Moore and Scott Martin paced Purdue with 16 points apiece. Moore chipped in seven rebounds and five assists, while Martin pulled down four boards. Joining Moore and Martin in double figures for the Old Gold and Black was fellow rookie JaJuan Johnson with 13 points and sophomore captain Chris Kramer with 12. Kramer also nabbed a game-high three steals and a block, and Johnson erased a pair of SVSU shots. The Boilermakers forced the Cardinals into 21 turnovers on the night, while committing a mere nine of their own. Purdue also made a huge dent on the offensive glass, reigning in 15 offensive boards, and converted them into 17 second-chance points. Senior point guard Mario Mackey led SVSU with 22 points, followed closely by junior guard Dante Williams, who buried 21 points including five three-pointers. Sophomore Lawrence Ross chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds, and junior center Mike Zuiderveen hauled in a game-high 11 boards. The Boilermakers got off to a slow start, turning the ball over or missing a three-point shot on their first six possessions. Head Coach Matt Painter responded by subbing five fresh bodies into the game, but no immediate change occurred as the new group missed another three and the ensuing 19-footer. SVSU was unable to capitalize on the Purdue shooting woes, netting only two buckets during the early drought to take a 4-0 lead. Purdue junior Chris Reid broke the silence just before the 16-minute mark, hitting a turnaround bucket from the right block, and freshman Chad Sutor followed with a pair of free throws to even the count. The Cardinals continued to hang on to their slight lead over the three and a half minutes on the strength of triples from Mackey and Williams. Purdue took its first lead of the game just under seven minutes into the game as junior Marcus Green canned a shot from behind the arc and Kramer pilfered the ensuing inbounds pass and finished for a quick five-point swing. SVSU's aerial assault kept it close, knocking down two more threes over the next couple minutes, but three points was as close as they could keep it as the Boilermakers proceeded to an 11-0 run to stretch their advantage to 33-19 with 4:02 left in the half. Williams attempted to put the Cardinals on his back, scoring eight straight, but the Boilers responded after each of his baskets to keep their opponents at bay. Junior point guard Tarrance Crump closed out the half with a pair of free throws to give Purdue its largest lead of the half, 42-27. Things weren't much better for the Cardinals after the break as it took them nearly three minutes to crack the scoring column, while Purdue mounted a 12-4 run to make it a 23-point ball game. Not ready to surrender, SVSU hacked its deficit back to 14 points, 57-43, on the strength of a pair of buckets from Williams and a five-point run from Mackey. However, this would be the last of the rally cries as Moore triggered a 14-0 Boilermaker run to push the lead over 30 and erase any hopes of a comeback. The Boilermakers open the regular season next Thursday as they host Bethune Cookman at 7 p.m. in Mackey Arena.
