WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's basketball team got its 2007-08 season underway on Thursday night with a 89-64 exhibition victory over the University of Indianapolis at Mackey Arena. Boilermaker freshmen Scott Martin, Robbie Hummel, JaJuan Johnson and E'Twaun Moore led the way as they all hit double-figures in the scoring column.

Martin led all scorers with 19 points on eight-of-16 shooting, including three three-pointers. Hummel posted a full stat-line with 17 points, seven assists, six rebounds, three steals and a block, while Johnson tallied 16 points, five boards and three blocks and Moore added 10 points. The Boilermakers shot 49.3% (33-for-67) from the floor, while holding the Greyhounds to just 36.8% (21-for-57). Purdue also held an advantage on the glass, clearing 43 boards compared to Indianapolis' 36. Senior guard DeAndre Brock paced the Greyhounds with 15 points, while junior Tyke Cockerham added 12.

Indianapolis kept it close early, keeping Purdue within four points for the first eight minutes, and knotting the count at 13-13 on a three-pointer by freshman Tyler Kitchel with 11:52 left in the half. However, back-to-back threes from Martin and Hummel, and a pair of Hummel free throws gave the Old Gold and Black an eight-point cushion they would hardly look back from.

"At the start we were a bit shaky, but we eventually got that out of our systems," said Hummel.

Hummel stretched the lead to 13 with another trifecta at the 5:47-mark, and although Kitchel responded with a three of his own just over a minute later, the Boilermakers went on to tally a 10-1 run on the strength of three-straight blocks to push ahead 43-24. Johnson recorded two of the stuffs, the first leading to a Martin three-pointer and the second to a layup by junior Marcus Green. The first-half advantage ended up at 16, 46-30, as Johnson took a fast-break dish from Hummel for a dunk with just one tic left on the clock.

The second half had a choppy tempo as Indianapolis put the Boilermakers in the bonus just 3:40 into the period, while Purdue returned the favor just 3:07 later. The high foul-count didn't affect the game much as the Boilers' advantage stayed around 16-points until an alley-oop from senior Tarrance Crump to Johnson at the 12-minute mark ignited a scoring spurt that pushed the lead over 20 for the rest of the game. Six straight points from Moore, gave Purdue a 24-point edge, and a three-ball from fellow rookie Chad Sutor notched the Boilermakers' biggest lead of the night, 27 points (82-55). All 10 of Moore's points came in the second half as did Sutor's five points and junior guard Bobby Riddell's four points.

Crump finished with seven points and five assists for Purdue, while Green grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with four points and four assists. Sophomore captain Chris Kramer had a trio of steals in just 16 minutes of action.

"It was good to get the first game under out belt and get the butterflies out," said Martin. "Now we need to get used to the rhythm of the game."

The Old Gold and Black continue their exhibition slate next Thursday, Nov. 8, at 8 p.m. in Mackey Arena against Saginaw Valley State.
